The Sofitel London St. James is a five-star hotel located in London’s West End. The hotel was situated perfectly for sightseeing and contributed to a memorable first time in London!
The hotel is in an excellent location on Waterloo Place, around many historic buildings and close to many attractions. As such, I was comfortable staying here by myself on a week-long trip to London, as I met up with friends already in city.
The taxi ride from Heathrow Airport to the hotel was about an hour. From the moment I arrived, the hotel service was superb. After a long flight “across the pond”, the service team welcomed me and suggested to wait in the beautiful St. James Bar. I ordered tea while I waited, which was taken care of by the hotel, to my surprise.
In the room, there was both a welcome card, as well as a handwritten card with my name. I appreciated the personalized touch and welcome treats upon my arrival.

I stayed in the luxury room during my stay which was very spacious and elegantly decorated.
The room had a very comfortable bed, bedding, and room amenities.
It was very well maintained and had a nice view of the city.
Hotel Services and Amenities
Other amenities and highlights of the hotel include:
- fitness center – the gym was small but had everything I needed. I used it daily.
- Michelin star restaurant, Wild Honey St. James
- The Rose Lounge – beautifully decorated lounge for afternoon tea.
- St. James Bar – elegant bar for cocktails and a newly launched food menu.
- Sofitel Spa – I had a wonderfully relaxing massage at the beautiful spa.
There are many attractions that are walking distance, which made it a great base to explore from. Although there is a London Underground station nearby, major sights can be explored from the hotel without using the Tube if you enjoy walking. For instance, attractions that are less than a ten minute walk from the hotel include:
- Trafalgar Square
- National Gallery – free to visit
- St. James Park
- His Majesty’s Theatre (renamed from “Her Majesty’s Theatre” in 2023)
- Piccadilly Circus and more
My experience at the Sofitel London St. James was truly a wonderful stay. I still need to return one day to try the afternoon tea in the lovely Rose Lounge! In summary, the elegant hotel, in a grade II listed building, provides excellent service in a great location in London. Also note, some rooms have been “newly designed” since my stay, which is sure to enhance an already luxurious experience at this landmark hotel.
