The diverse cultures of Toronto also bring amazing food options and choices to the city. In this Nurture Happiness Today FOODIE post, we share our favourite places for (West Indian) roti in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), all of them serving delicious Caribbean cuisine for decades!

Mona’s Roti

When in Scarborough, a stop at Mona’s Roti for delicious food always comes to mind! Family owned, Mona’s Roti offers roti and other Caribbean dishes. They first opened their business in Trinidad and now have two locations in Canada.

The first Canadian location opened in Scarborough along Sheppard Ave East, between McCowan Road and Markham Road. I have been going this location of Mona’s Roti for many years, as they first opened its doors here in 2003. Do not be surprised to find a line of people waiting to order food at this location as they serve delicious fresh food. You can see your roti being put together on the counter and food being prepared in the open kitchen.

You can drop by the store located in a small plaza in Scarborough, order online for pickup, or order delivery through their delivery partners.

Ajax location: 3 Harwood Avenue South, Ajax, ON L1S 2C1

The Roti Hut

The Roti Hut has been at the same address in Scarborough since 1982. It is located in a small plaza and continues to serve their loyal customers delicious food. I have been going to The Roti Hut since I was young as it is one of the OG establishments in the GTA serving roti and other Caribbean dishes, rooted in their Trinidadian and Caribbean tradition.

Dine-in, take-out, and delivery is available through their delivery partners. We also love the doubles (chickpea) and pholourie at The Roti Hut.

The Original Drupati’s

When in the west end of Toronto, the original Drupati’s, located in Etobicoke (Finchwood Plaza) offers delicious West Indian cuisine, serving the community since 1993. This location offers “Trinidadian-focused Caribbean fare.”

Today, there are also locations in Scarborough, Woodbridge, and Ajax. Therefore, please check the website and view the menu to see what each location offers.

Original location: 35 Woodbine Downs Blvd #3A, Etobicoke, ON M9W 6N5

Island Foods

The first Island Foods Restaurant opened in 1974 (in Dufferin Mall) by the Sawh family. Today, Island Foods continues to serve Caribbean foods using family recipes at two locations.

I first tried Island Foods at the downtown Toronto location at the Grange. It was where I had my first curry goat (boneless) roti and was hooked! Island Foods was known to serve one of the best goat roti in town at the downtown Toronto locations.

Although the Grange and King and Dufferin Toronto locations are now closed, there are Island Food locations on Don Mills Road and in Markham.

Locations:
• 1310 Don Mills Road, Toronto, ON M3B 2W6
• 8630 Woodbine Avenue, Markham, ON L3R 4X8
