If you are visiting the beautiful city of Boston, especially for the first time, we highly recommend the Boston Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tours! For us, the Old Town Trolley was really convenient and an excellent way to get around the city!

We stayed three nights in Boston, choosing to ring in the New Year at Copley square! The city of Boston is filled with something for everyone, particularly festive and decorated nicely during the holiday season!

Since there were many places we knew we wanted to visit located all around the city, we purchased the two-day pass for the Old Town Trolley. Notably, this was also the first time we were trying a “hop on hop off” tour. We were looking forward to experience it!

In the end, the Old Town Trolley tours is all that we needed to get around the city! There is a trolley stop at Copley Square, conveniently only steps from Fairmont Copley Plaza Boston hotel where we stayed – read our article and review here.

With almost twenty trolley stops, we visited the major tourist attractions we intended to visit easily! The two-day pass provided two consecutive days of free unlimited re-boarding.

Therefore, we found the two-day pass was well worth every penny, especially in the winter. The trolleys are enclosed and transport around the city is possible whether it is raining, snowing, or sunny!

Old Town Trolley: Hop On Hop Off Trolley Stops

At the time of writing, there are eighteen trolley stops to explore the sites and surrounding area of Boston (subject to change):

  1. Faneuil Hall
  2. Historic North End
  3. USS Constitution and Museum
  4. North Station / TD Garden
  5. Downtown Crossing / Historic District
  6. Beacon Hill / Antique Row
  7. Cheers Bar
  8. Prudential Center
  9. Christian Science Plaza / Symphony Hall
  10. Copley Place Mall
  11. Copley Square / Back Bay
  12. Old Town Trolley Welcome Center / Theater District
  13. New State House / Boston Common
  14. Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum
  15. Boston Convention Center
  16. Massport / Black Falcon Cruise Ship Terminal
  17. Boston Fish Pier
  18. South Station

In addition to using the trolley for transportation, you can choose to sit on the trolley and just enjoy the tour of the city. The Boston tour is thirteen miles long and approximately two hours.

We sat for the tour once to get an overview of the city and sights we could visit. It was also entertaining and informative as the driver provides commentary during the tour. The seats are elevated for a nice view during the tour and we always found a seat.

Ultimately, the Old Town Trolley let us get a glimpse of some places and enabled us to leave the trolley when we wanted to explore longer! When we were ready to hop back on the trolley, the wait was never too long at any of the designated stops, “but typically it is every 20 minutes.” Of course, weather and traffic can potentially affect the wait and tour.

We were able to hop on and hop off the trolley to explore sites and get closer to other attraction too, such as:

  • Faneuil Hall stop – to explore the nearby Quincy Market
  • Boston Public Garden
  • Boston Fish Pier (stop 17) – we visited the Institute of Contemporary Art and the harbourfront.
