1) Grenada Chocolate

Grenada is one of the few places in the world that produces chocolate “from tree to bar.”

We particularly loved the locally produced chocolate with nutmeg! It is a must eat food in Grenada!

And, we also highly recommend touring one of the famous chocolate factories! Fellow foodies should really enjoy the experience!

Belmont Estate Chocolate

Belmont Estate not only produces delicious chocolate, but the 17th century plantation is also a popular tourist attraction in Grenada!

We loved our private “Classic Tour” at Belmont Estate where we learned about the history of cocoa on the island, its production, and even had the opportunity to “walk the cocoa beans” in the drying trays! Check back for our detailed article of our visit and tour!

We included Belmont Estate in our customized private tour of the island. Also, there are guided group tours that include the estate with other places.

All the chocolate we tried at the Belmont Estate was delicious! There is a store after the estate tour where we tried various flavours.

As the island is known for its spices, we purchased several bars of the “Belmont Estate Organics “Pure Grenada Dark Milk Chocolate with Spices” (60% cocoa) for ourselves and as gifts for our family back home! Delicious!

TIP: be sure to buy your Belmont Estate Chocolate at the estate since the chocolate bars were double the price at the stores at St. George Grenada Airport!

Jouvay Chocolate

The Diamond Chocolate Factory makes Jouvay chocolate, another popular Grenadian chocolate brand!

We purchased a few bars of the “Jouvay Chocolate with Nutmeg” at the airport on the way home. The chocolate is made with “60% Cocoa Content with Nutmeg” and labelled as “made from 100% Grenadian cocoa”!

Locals and tourists can also visit the Diamond Chocolate Factory where tours and chocolate tastings are offered!

TIP: Grenada Chocolate Festival
*the Grenada Chocolate Festival is an annual celebration in May
*the chocolate festival first launched in 2014 *the week-long festival “celebrates all things cocoa” which also features activities and experiences all over the island!

2) Fresh Cacao Bean Pulp

Try fresh pulp from the inside of a cacao fruit! The roasted beans from the fruit, or cocoa, is used to make chocolate!

We really enjoyed our “Classic Tour” at Belmont Estate and recommend it!

Our guide opened a cacao fruit pod on the chocolate tour for us to try!

The pulp is sweet, light and juicy! And do not to swallow the seed.

3) “Oil Down”: Grenada’s National Dish

Venture away from your resort and try authentic Grenadian food!

We wanted to try the island’s national dish, Oil Down, and made sure to mention this to our local guide! This was one of our must eat foods in Grenada!

We ate at a local spot, “Good Food” restaurant, during our private all-day tour of the island (check back for our review and details on our private tour)!

The one-pot stew we ate included fish, pork, dumplings, vegetables (e.g. plantain), coconut milk and breadfruit.

Our plate was full and we ate every last bite!

4) Nutmeg Ice Cream

Known as the “Isle of Spice,” Grenada is a top producer of nutmeg as well as other spices. And if you like dessert, nutmeg ice cream is definitely one of our recommended must eat foods in Grenada!

If you are staying at Sandals Grenada, be sure to try their delicious nutmeg ice cream! The ice cream is available at the resort’s patisserie, Café de Paris, which serves various desserts and coffees!

Some Facts about Nutmeg & Grenada:
*Flag of Grenada: there is one nutmeg on the national flag as it is one of the island’s main exports
*Production: Grenada is one of the top producers of nutmeg in the world
*Origin: Nutmeg is not native to Grenada! Nutmeg was introduced to the country by European traders and merchants. It is native to Indonesia, the top producer of nutmeg in the world.

5) Traditional Grenadian breakfast

When I travel, I want to try the local cuisine and specialties! This includes eating a traditional breakfast!

In Grenada, a typical breakfast may include foods like:

  • “bakes” – bread, which can be baked or fried
  • saltfish souse
  • fried plantains

If you are staying at Sandals Grenada, the traditional breakfast may not be available in the restaurants! However, we were able to have a delicious traditional Grenadian breakfast when we ordered room service!

6) Grenadian Side Dishes

Be sure to try the delicious various Grenadian side dishes!

In addition to our order of Oil Down for lunch, mentioned earlier, we also ordered a plate of grilled fish. It was served with several Grenadian traditional side dishes such as:

  • rice and peas
  • provisions, i.e. root vegetables
  • callaloo
  • macaroni pie

Although variations of these side dishes are available throughout the Caribbean, each place and meal are somewhat different! Therefore, even if you have tried the side dishes elsewhere, these side dishes are still must eat foods in Grenada in our opinion!

7) Roti

Like many Caribbean islands influenced by (East) Indian cuisine, roti is popular in Grenada!

Typically filled with meat (e.g. chicken, goat, shrimp) and/or vegetables, make sure to try roti in Grenada! It is likely available at your resort, street food, and in local restaurants!

Other Grenadian Foods

Other traditional foods (that we did not get the chance to try in Grenada) include:

  • Lambie (conch)
    • we’ve tried lambie on other Caribbean islands like Bahamas! Lambie can be cooked and enjoyed in different ways e.g. souse, grilled, stewed, fried lambie fritters.
  • Crab back – stuffed crab shell with crabmeat!

Must Eat Foods in Grenada: Conclusion

There are certainly many more delicious must eat foods in Grenada than those included in this short list! Our vacation in the beautiful Spice Island surpassed our expectations! And hopefully, we will return to explore more!

Happy travels and enjoy Grenada!
