A big part of the happiness we get from vacations is certainly from food we have indulged in! Nurture Happiness Today FOODIE shares foods to try in Paris, including some of the places.

We received many recommendations of foods and restaurants to try on our first trip to Paris, France. Like all tips, some were great, some were not, and of course, some, regardless of what we researched, were places we just had to try for ourselves!

Desserts & Pastries

Paris is of course famous for their desserts and pastries! There were so many mouth-watering treats to choose from that were as beautiful to look at, as they were to savour. With so many patisseries and confectioneries, we had to highlight Angelina Paris! You will likely come across this tea house which became famous after it first opened in 1903. We absolutely had to taste their Mont-Blanc and the famous old-fashioned hot chocolate. According to their website, the Mont-Blanc is the “true emblem of the House of Angelina”. Decadent and rich, we tried the chocolate and raspberry Mont-Blanc.

Macarons

Interestingly, there are different views on the origin (e.g. French, Italian, Arab) of the macaron. Nonetheless, I think we can all agree that the macaron is delightful! The french macaron is a sweet, delicate treat, that is widely available in Paris ranging from traditional (chocolate, vanilla) to more contemporary (e.g. matcha) or unusual flavours.

Most people are familiar with Laduree if you love macarons. Laduree first opened in 1862 and has grown to be one of the most well-known brands, with stores around the world. We had macarons at Laduree’s flagship store, the Champs Elysees location, and also throughout our Paris vacation, particularly as Laduree was readily available.

Laduree’s pistachio and the Marie-Antoinette Tea flavours were some of our favourites.

Several places in Paris famous for macarons include:

  • Pierre Herme
  • Laduree
  • Angelina’s
  • Carette
  • La Maison du Chocolat

Souffle

The souffle was created in France in the early eighteenth century and can be served as a savory dish or dessert. One of our most memorable meals in Paris was our meal at Le Souffle (article coming soon in Nurture Happiness Today Foodie section)!

Be sure to try this decadent french meal when in Paris! Both the savory and dessert versions are absolutely delicious!

Escargot

Snails are probably not for everyone, but it was certainly on our list of foods to have in Paris! Considered a delicacy in French cuisine, it has a comparable texture to other seafood such as squid and clams.

We ordered it as an appetizer at a traditional French bistro, baked with garlic butter, already removed from their shells. Escargot can also be served still in the shell, but takes a bit more work as the meat needs to be extracted, and therefore served with tongs and seafood fork.

Duck Confit

A classic French dish, duck confit involves salt curing the duck, then cooking it in its own duck fat. Fatty and delicious, we had confit duck legs a few times in Paris! We wanted to make sure we experienced this quintessential French dish where the practice of confit originated. Definitely worth the extra calories in our opinion!
