Reduces stress and improves your well-being

Historically, I have booked my annual beach vacation after my most stressful time of year at work. Like so many of you, the beach helps me recover physically and mentally, helping to combat stress and feeling burnt out. “Feel good” hormones and serotonin levels in our bodies increase so we feel happier and more relaxed!

This WebMD.com article discusses the mental health benefits of the beach. Therefore, it may be time to book a beach vacation to recharge your body and have some fun!

Improved sleep

Many people already know that the relaxing sound of the ocean and salt water in the air often result in better sleep. This is also highlighted in a study that found that a walk by the sea will help you sleep longer.

As such, it is not surprising that many people listen to the sounds of the ocean to help with relaxation and falling asleep, for example, with mobile apps and sound machines.

Helps improve skin

After a swim or dip in the ocean, one of the best benefits is how soft my skin feels! The sea salt helps exfoliate the (dead) skin and may help relieve other skin conditions like eczema, acne, and psoriasis. This article from MedicalNewsToday.com discusses the benefits of saltwater for the skin.

Promotes physical activity

Aside from swimming, many fun physical activities can be done alone or with others at the beach, including:

  • surfing
  • paddle boarding
  • flying a kite
  • beach volleyball
  • dancing (e.g. beach party) and more!

In addition to the list above, walking and running on the beach can burn a lot of calories and is a great way to clear your mind as discussed in this Healthline.com article here.

Living near water has health benefits

Lastly, studies have shown that living near bodies of water, not just sea water, also have health benefits.

To highlight, a Canadian study which followed over one million Canadians over more than ten years, indicates that “living near natural water features, such as rivers, lakes, and the ocean, may actually lead to a longer life.”

Additionally, a study of over 25,000 people in England, “revealed that living in large towns and cities near to England’s coastline is linked with better mental health for those in the lowest earning households.”
