We share our lovely recent experience of afternoon tea at Clockwork in Toronto! The tradition of afternoon tea can be enjoyed at various restaurants in the city. This is one of our favourite places to enjoy an afternoon of tea, scones, sandwiches and delightful desserts. Located at the beautiful Fairmont Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto, afternoon tea is an elegant treat here!
Although Clockwork is located in the hotel lobby, the area is nicely sectioned off and surrounded by beautiful decor. Not surprising, Clockwork looked fully booked with guests for afternoon tea the day we visited.
We were seated in a lovely corner table with beautiful curved couch seating. Despite being in the lobby, our seating felt intimate and quiet enough to carry on a conversation. We had a nice view of the illuminated bar and clock while we sipped on our tea. Also, to our delight, live music was being played in the lobby to add to the beautiful setting.
Savory & Sweet
All the savory and sweet treats were delicious. In particular, I enjoyed the cranberry walnut scone! The scones were served with a delicious berry compote and whipped cream.
From the selection of teas offered, we enjoyed the “creamy earl grey” tea, a classic tea selection.
Also, the preset food menu changes, especially with the seasons. Another favourite on this visit included the house-smoked trout rillettes!
If you are celebrating an occasion, I always recommend mentioning it to the venue!
I noted in the reservation booking that we were celebrating a birthday. As such, I requested if “Happy Birthday” could be included somehow.
Clockwork graciously had “Happy Birthday” written on a rectangular piece of chocolate to help make our celebratory visit a little more special!

For reservations, book a few weeks in advance:
- To book reservations, you can access from the restaurant’s website.
- Also, be sure to book at Clockwork, rather than the Library Bar, at the Fairmont Royal York. Afternoon Tea is no longer served in the Library Bar (at the time of writing in 2023).
Overall, we had a lovely afternoon at Clockwork inside the Fairmont Royal York hotel. We enjoyed the beautiful ambiance, as expected, from the iconic grand hotel. Service was delightful and we look forward to returning to have afternoon tea at Clockwork!
