The Charles Hotel is a historic mansion, located in Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL), built in 1832. On our many visits to Niagara-on-the-Lake, we always drove by The Charles Hotel and commented how it looked like an elegant, cozy place to stay.
We share some pictures and what we enjoyed during our recent stay at The Charles Hotel. Overall, we enjoyed our two-nights in the suite called “The Verandah Room” during a visit in June.
Accommodations at The Charles Hotel
There are twelve rooms available at The Charles Hotel ranging in size, each featuring different decor. Room types include the following:
- Deluxe Rooms
- Premium Rooms
- Petite Queen Rooms
- Suites:
- “The Verandah Room”
- “The Safari Loft”
There are three floors at the hotel, with “The Verandah Room” suite on the ground floor, and “The Safari Loft” suite on the third floor.
“The Verandah Room” Suite at The Charles Hotel
We stayed in “The Verandah Room“ suite for two nights in the summer. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a nice card acknowledging our celebratory occasion for the visit and a couple thoughtful treats. The kind gesture and warm welcome was greatly appreciated!
“The Verandah Room” suite is located on the ground floor of the hotel. Therefore, we did not have to use the stairs, for example, when going to and from the onsite restaurant.
The room was elegantly decorated and had a comfortable king-sized bed. There is a large fireplace and a separate seating area with a couch in the spacious suite.
One of the main highlights of the suite is of course the private verandah, sectioned for our use only, accessible through French doors from the suite. There is comfortable patio furniture and a view of the beautiful garden. The verandah is a great spot to sit back and enjoy a glass of wine in the summer evening after exploring the area!
Dining at The Charles Hotel
During our stay, we had breakfast twice at The Charles Hotel. Breakfast was served in an enclosed verandah with windows, which was great during our visit in the summer.
The breakfast at The Charles Hotel was delicious. We even ordered the same breakfast again the next morning: French Toast and Eggs Benedict with spinach and smoked Atlantic salmon.
Hob Nob is the on-site fine dining restaurant at The Charles Hotel. It also serves lunch and dinner, available to guests and also open to the public.
There is also an on-site lounge and wine bar at The Charles Hotel. Although we did not try “The Lounge”, the food menu includes “starters” (e.g. salads, charcuterie board) as well as “mains” such as a “Charles Burger”, chicken wings, gnocchi, etc. (menus are subject to change).
For some recreation while in the area, there are trails for walking and biking nearby that are gorgeous to explore. We have gone bike riding in NOTL previously and always find it so enjoyable. Therefore, fortunately, there are bicycles for rent, located by the parking lot of The Charles Hotel. The bicycles are available to rent through the Zoom Bike Share app (e.g. rental by the hour) and great for a leisurely ride. Bring your own bicycle helmet if you prefer to ride with one as well. We rode the bicycles along the Niagara River Recreation Trail from Fort George, by the wineries, and the surrounding area.
For a NOTL tour with a professional, local guide, there are combined bicycle and winery tour options also available. These tours are great options for groups also, often seen bike riding in the area in the summer.
Other Highlights & Notes:
- The shops and restaurants in the historic Old Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is a short walk from the hotel.
- The Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club is located next to The Charles Hotel. The club’s website indicates it is “the oldest surviving golf club in North America”. Non-members can inquire directly, in advance, with the golf club for availability.
- There is no spa or gym onsite at The Charles Hotel (at the time of writing of this article).
The location of the hotel is great as it is walking distance to the shops on Queen Street and the Shaw Festival Theatre if looking to stay in town. We did not see any of the other rooms at The Charles Hotel, therefore, research accordingly for opinions and reviews of the other accommodations offered.
Overall, we enjoyed our relaxing stay in “The Verandah Suite” this summer; we are happy we were able to experience this former mansion with historic charm. Lastly, everyone at The Charles Hotel and restaurant was friendly and provided us with excellent service throughout our stay, from the moment we arrived! Cheers!
