Located in the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada, Tobermory attracts many visitors in the summer months. We share a few of the places in Tobermory where we ate that were popular in the area.

The area is known for scenic natural attractions such as the Grotto and Flowerpot Island. Be sure to check out the Nurture Happiness Today TRAVEL article on Sightseeing in Bruce Peninsula & Tobermory as well if you are planning a visit.

Tobermory is a relatively small community so we typically came across lines at restaurants if we did not have a reservation during our visit. We also visited in August during peak tourist season so the area was busy. We suggest visiting during the week as we did, rather than on weekends, to avoid the larger crowds.

We came across Coconut Joe’s in our search of where to eat in Tobermory. It is a popular spot in the area and fortunately, reservations can be booked.

Coconut Joe’s is a casual waterfront restaurant and we were welcomed with friendly service. The menu has a variety of options including smaller portioned “beach bites”, tacos, “island feasts”, and burgers.

We liked the festive island-inspired theme of the restaurant and spacious outdoor patio on a beautiful August afternoon.

From the menu we ordered:

  • Coconut Fried Shrimp
  • “Island Feast”: Smoked Applewood Whitefish
  • two desserts

Look out for the Tacomory sign, shown below, along the road, as the food truck could be difficult to see as you are driving along Highway 6.

Las Chulas

Las Chulas is a small take out place that serves “authentic Mexican street food”. The menu includes tacos, quesadillas, and they also offer sandwiches and breakfast.

Being a popular spot in Tobermory, a couple of the tacos were unfortunately already sold out (including the shrimp tacos) when we arrived late afternoon. All the tacos are served with double corn tortillas.

When we ordered we were asked whether we wanted the tacos spicy or mild. If you are in Tobermory and like Mexican street food, give it a try! We ate outside and enjoyed our tacos!

We ordered the following tacos:

  • Birria: shredded beef brisket
  • Alloo Masala: spicy potatoes
  • Cochinita Pibil: pulled pork

Shipwreck Lee’s At the Ferry Dock

There are two locations of Shipwreck Lee’s in Tobermory. We dined at the location “By the Ferry Dock”. It was a perfect summer day in August to enjoy their outdoor spacious patio.

The menu offers chicken, ribs, burgers and sandwiches and fried fish. An “All You Can Eat Fish N Chips” and “All You Can Eat Fried Chicken & French Fries” is also currently offered at this spot that provided us friendly service by the waterfront.

We ordered:

  • Fried whitefish and shrimp, served with french fries.
  • “CheddARRR Angus burger”, served with french fries.
